Population boom for Burrowing owls in Cape Coral: Annual census shows big gains for bird

The Burrowing owl population is thriving and growing on Cape Coral.

The results for 2025 Cape Coral Burrowing Owl Census were announced on Aug. 6. When the counting concluded during the weekend of May 17–18, a total of 7,008 owls were recorded.

This marks a significant increase from the approximately 5,200 owls recorded in 2024, a press release from the Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife said, and continues an encouraging upward trend in population growth since 2017.

Cape Coral Friend of Wildlife said this is a “testament to the collaborative efforts between the City of Cape Coral, the community, Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) and Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife (CCFW). Together, they’ve created an environment in which this threatened species can not only survive—but thrive.”
