Annual Count for Cape Coral Burrowing Owls underway
Burrowing Owls are the talk of Cape Coral this time of year.
Over 100 volunteers with Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife have set out across neighborhoods to count up the number of owls across the city.
Cape Coral has the largest population of the Florida species, (Athene cunicularia floridana) in the state.
Cape Coral is home to more than 2,500 burrows within the city limits, though not all are actively used by owls. Volunteers are still counting up the numbers and will have a total count in the coming weeks. We’ll be sure to get you more when the tallies come in.
