Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife to Host Special Burrowing Owl Presentation on March 2

Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife invites the community to attend a special educational presentation at Rotary Park Environmental Center, 5505 Rose Garden Road, Cape Coral.
The featured speaker will be Graham Dixon-MacCallum, Conservation Program Manager at the Wilder Institute in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Titled “Little Owls on the Prairie: Western Burrowing Owls and Efforts to Give Burrowing Owls a Head Start in Alberta, Canada,” the presentation will explore the Western subspecies of burrowing owls found throughout western North America. Dixon-MacCallum will discuss the conservation challenges these owls face and the innovative “head-starting” program used in Alberta, where juvenile owls are cared for during their first winter and released the following spring to improve survival rates.
The program will also highlight similarities and differences between the Western and Florida subspecies of burrowing owls and provide an opportunity to share conservation experiences across regions.
Dixon-MacCallum will also be a featured speaker at the Burrowing Owl Festival, Wildlife and Environmental Expo to be held on February 28th from 10:00 AM. to 4:00 PM. at Rotary Park, where he will present at 10:45 AM.
The March 2nd program offers residents another opportunity to learn about conservation efforts aimed at protecting this unique and charismatic species.
