SAVING THE OWLS: Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife will come dig you a burrow for a burrowing owl
Standing about 9 inches tall, these small but mighty birds are more than just cute. They’re natural pest control, keeping your yard free from rats, roaches, and lizards—without ever sending you a bill.
Cape Coral is home to one of the largest populations of burrowing owls in the state, and monitoring them across 100 square miles is no small feat. That’s why groups like Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife are so important. Not only do they advocate for owl protection, they’ll actually come to your home and dig a starter burrow for you. And with a bit of luck, within a year, a family of owls might just move onto your street.
“If you don’t want rats, you don’t want roaches, you don’t want lizards in your yard, these are your natural pest control. You don’t have to pay them either,” says Donaldson, a local wildlife advocate featured in the FOX 4 Now segment.
It’s a uniquely Cape Coral initiative—and a reminder that when a community supports its wildlife, everyone benefits.
